"oh, any work is like writing. a long time ago leonardo said, 'pittura è cosa mentale'—painting is a thing of the intellect. certainly so is poetry and literature and music. how does a composer compose? he sits at a desk and writes, just like a novelist. this idea we have of composers sitting at the piano, it’s absurd, it’s musical comedy. the serious composer sits just like a writer. and when i make a drawing i’m just like a writer. i have a desk—a bigger desk, of course; i need more space. but i sit down and look at this piece of paper and think, what am i going to do?"—saul steinberg
