10 seconds is all it takes for a recruiter or hiring manager to make the judgment that will affect whether or not you’re hired.
and it’s largely because of the confirmation bias.
here’s what it could look like: you blush when you introduce yourself. the hiring manager interprets your rosy cheeks as a lack of confidence, which then leads them to look for evidence that supports this hypothesis. for example, you look away when you think, or you say ‘we’ more than ‘i’ when talking about your achievements. without the original theory that you’re lacking confidence, these behaviours could be interpreted in many different ways (e.g. humility, focus, conscientiousness), but because of that original judgment the hiring manager made about you lacking confidence, everything you do will likely be viewed through this lens.
unfair, subjective and icky – i know.
but there is something you can do about it. stay tuned because we’ll be covering that tomorrow. .
