I get a lot of questions asking "how long should i run each day to become fitter for soccer?". the truth is, soccer is not long distance running. player cover a lot of ground during a game, but it is not at the same pace.
soccer consists of walking, sprints, high paced runs, jogging, twists and turns. therefore, it doesn't make sense to go out and run for 30 minutes and expect it to transfer over into a game.
if you want to improve your stamina, your time is better spend doing interval running. it is specific to the demands of soccer, and often takes less time and is more interesting than long, boring runs.
don't get me wrong, i'm not saying to never run long distances. i love to go for a run on a sunny day to clear my head and get my legs moving. but you have to understand this doesn't translate directly over to a game. so if it's a choice between running long distances or interval running, choose interval running.
i hope this helps some of you and there are plenty of examples of interval running sessions on my page, so go check them out.
