Since it's james mcavoy's birthday today, here is a little info on the paratrooper he portrayed in the miniseries:
private first class james w. miller of e company, 506th pir.
miller was born 11th april, 1920, in wabash, indiana. he grew up with 9 brothers and 3 sisters, and worked at the bunker hill naval air base before enlisting on dec 18th, 1942.
he volunteered for the paratroopers and was sent overseas in july 1944 to england. there he was placed in easy company, 1st platoon, under squad leader denver 'bull' randleman.
miller made his first combat jump on 17th sep, 1944, as part of operation market garden into the netherlands. sadly he would be kia during the fighting in the town of nuenen on 20th sep.
james' body was returned to the u.s along with 152 other soldiers from indiana aboard the u.s army transport barney kirchbaum. he was given a military service and buried in falls cemetery, wabash. ♠♠
