“i studied computer science as an undergrad and then got a master’s degree in data science. while pursing my master's degree, i took a class in the journalism school called “storytelling with data.” it was mostly meant for journalism students to get some programming experience, but i learned so much about presenting a compelling and convincing story with data, which i definitely leveraged when building dashboards or presenting analysis as a facebook intern and my current role. as an intern, i partnered with teams in seattle to work on marketplace, where our work was laser-focused on encouraging people to connect with local businesses through offers and loyalty programs. now, as a full-time data engineer, i’m still working on connecting people to their local community, through the lens of local news and community information.
i’m most proud of the work i’m doing now on the local news team—we’re building a place where people can go to find local news articles, groups, events, and posts from community pages. a lot of my work involves building pipelines to identify the publishers, pages, and groups that we source content from, so any improvements i make to those data pipelines directly improves the quality of content for the people who use our products.” —alex w., data engineer, facebook new york
