Oct 26 1985: the game before mj broke his foot; laimbeer hard foul on mj leads to coach brawl; pistons leave floor before end of game; mj swishes freethrow left-handed flanked by benny the bull and arena security. i failed to add in the headline that the iceman, spurs legend george gervin, was on the bulls in what was his final season; he passed rick barry for 7th on the all time scoring list with that finger roll. so this was the 2nd game of jordan's 2nd season. mj would break his foot the next game and miss 64 games. he recovered miraculously quick and lobbied the bulls to allow him to return before the playoffs. he came back from injury a different player. whereas mj had relied on his raw athleticism a little too much before the injury, often hanging a bit too long (who can blame him tho) and regularly forced shots, upon his return, he appeared more rigid physically and calculated mentally. their 1st round matchup was against the '86 celtics, a team led by the 3-year reigning mvp larry bird. jordan had 49pts in game 1 and 63pts in game 2 (let me know if you want to see that edit). mj wasn't slowed down by the offseason and took off in '86-'87, posting what remains his highest scoring average for a season, 37.4ppg (kobe in '05-'06 had the highest ppg since, at 35.4ppg). the pistons-bulls playoff rivalry began the in '88, which is when detroit morphed into the bad boys. they acquired dennis rodman, john salley, and adrian dantley prior to the season and implemented a defensive-oriented, physical style of play. the bulls would lose to the pistons in the playoffs in '88, '89, and '90; the pistons meanwhile made it to the finals 3 years in a row, winning in '89 and '90. the bulls annihilated the pistons in the '91 playoffs, their leaders laimbeer and thomas infamously refusing to shake hands and heading to the locker room before the end of the series clinching game. here, down 1 with 1 second left, laimbeer missed the game tying free throw and detroit fouled mj. the pistons left the court as mj swished a lefty free throw with benny the bull on the court in a surreal moment.
