The faces i saw in turkey : ayvalik – i met her as we were walking along the waterfront of the seaside town of ayvalik, situated at the northwestern aegean coast of turkey. she was pulling a fishing line out from the sea. “merhaba” (hello), i said to her. she responded with the same greeting and a smile. although we did not speak each other’s language, we seemed to understand one another very well.
i continued in english, “are you catching fish?” she replied in rapid turkish, while nodding her head. i was sceptical that she could catch anything – for she was not using any proper fishing equipment, like a rod (not that i know much about fishing). but as she reached the end of the line which she was pulling from the sea, i saw a little fish 🐟 wriggling frantically at the end of it. i exclaimed enthusiastically, not believing what i saw. she seemed amused at my excitement. she kept talking to me in turkish, and stretched out her hand which was holding the fish to me, willing me to touch it. not wanting to disappoint her, i did.
• “are you going to cook the fish?”, i asked. she shook her head and threw the fish at a waiting cat 🐱, which grabbed the poor fish and ran to devour the treat in private 😛.
