Post barre class #bookstagram. read these two last week. i loved @zinziclemmons’ what we lose. a gorgeous meditation on grief & coming of age, i think one reviewer said it best when they described it as, “a story about becoming a woman after the most important one has been taken from you.” i already know this is going to be one of my favourites from 2018. .
new people by danzy senna. i was so excited to read this one because i love senna’s writing. maybe it’s because i’d just read what we lose, which dealt with a lot of the same topics (identity, race, loss) in a way that felt so immediate & visceral, but something about new people didn’t work for me. reading it felt a bit like a fever dream: it goes off in so many different directions (some of which are really great) & then ends really abruptly. if this book was longer i think it could have fleshed out some of these loose ends. with that said, i read it in two sittings. .
