Mercedes benz 300sel 6.8 amg ‘red pig’ (w109) (1970-1971)
the mercedes benz 300sel 6.3 was to emerge into the bright lights of the 1968 geneva motor show and is a precursor to the s-class mercedes benz’s available today.
amg got their hands on the big merc increasing the sel’s displacement to 6,835cc. after adding new camshafts, rocker arms, piston heads, intakes, exhaust, anything that could make more power was bolted in. they raised the horsepower to 428hp and with 448lb-ft of torque.
all that power was necessary to haul the ‘red pig’ over the finishing line. that power was a necessity due to all the weight as it retained the rear bench seats, air suspension, panel doors and the wood trim. aluminum doors were used to reduce weight, the ‘red pig’ was one of the most luxurious race cars but also one of the heaviest.
going into the 24-hour race in belgium at spa in 1971, amg looked out of the running but turned it around and eventually won, stunning all the other teams that were looking on.
