Day 4 of the cure. i might be switching back to poly. this process is lengthy. who has switched from lacquer to poly? there’s so much debate, yet so many renown makers doing things both ways. i think for me, i love the idea of lacquer- easily repaired, forgiving, has been used for almost a century as a musical instrument finish. you can see why i and so many are comfortable with it. looking to builders like kevin ryan and michael greenfield one might start to reconsider the possibility of a finish that can be applied and buffed out in a matter of a few days. i myself have used a catalyzed polyester finish, catalyzed urethanes, water based lacquer and nitro. ease of application definitely goes to nitrocellulose. but i can’t help but feel anxious and long for the days of polyester while these things sit in the closet for 3 weeks waiting to be assembled. -
ultimately, it comes down to tone. we’ve all heard the debate- but what do you guys think?
