Meet mr. roger poliah. he is cocoa development officer with the @cdcttl
and visionary behind the formation of the rio claro fine flavour cocoa fermenters limited (rcffcfl). he brought some of the best farmers from his cluster together, pitched them the idea to form a cocoa fermenter association and provided support to get the group started.
he currently is responsible for the areas of biche, charuma, cushe, ecclesville, poole and rio claro, and his main role is to ensure high quality in cocoa production, and monitor post-harvest techniques of the regions farmers and fermenters. this though is just a drop in the bucket of what he does. **
in 2001, roger moved from a clerical position to a technical one, becoming a cocoa inspector. his areas of expertise include a strong technical background in cocoa production and post-harvest techniques; from fermenting to drying, and exporting. **
an accounting technician, roger’s methodical approach and obsession to detail is reflected in his work; from documenting processes, to developing production manuals & models, to the creation of an innovative traceability system for the farmers and fermenters to use, so that each batch of cocoa can be tracked from the farm to the end user.
in 2017, he recently worked very closely with the rio claro demonstration station to develop the quality cocoa beans, that were ranked in the world’s top 50 at the international salon du chocolat in paris, one of only two trinidad & tobago samples awarded that year. **
in his spare time, he’s an agro processor with country style cocoa & coffee (with a presence at the namdevco farmers market for 3 years) and he uses this outlet to encourage farmers & fermenters to delve into value added activity. for him, the country style facebook page is about sensitizing and educating people about trinidad & tobago’s sector.
how does he like chocolate? roger prefers to mix it with country style coffee coffee to create a mocha blend.
