Blade runner 2049 (2017)
5/5 stars— simply incredible throughout, but especially in terms of narrative structure, cinematography, and the casting of ryan gosling. the slow pacing was beautifully realized & contributed so much to the narrative, which was one of the most well-done puzzles i’ve ever experienced. yes, it is a slow burn, but my attention never faltered. the tone was thoughtful & meditative— its strengths lied in the quiet & it was beautiful. it builds on the original film in natural ways that ensure the film is deeply connected to the original, but not fully dependent on it. it stands strong on its own. i honestly prefer it to the original film, which was never a favorite of mine. ryan gosling is at his best in this film— i couldn’t have imagined anyone else in the role; he was perfectly cast & carried the movie beautifully.
i do think the film faltered in its portrayal of women & sincerely wish that component of an otherwise fantastic screenplay had been handled with more care. i also think that harrison ford was an unnecessary component & the film would have been fine without him, but hey— if he wants to be in all his classic films again, why not! i simply think ryan gosling was incredible & carried the narrative brilliantly on his own!!
