The moon is slowly receding as the earth’s rotation falters — a consequence of the inescapable symmetry and reciprocity in our underlying dynamics. as a result, the distance between us expands by approximately 3.78cm per year.
on december 14, 1972 at precisely 5:55pm est, apollo xvii, nasa’s final apollo mission, successfully lifted off the lunar surface, marking the end of our last manned expeditions to the moon. since this departure, forty-five years have passed and we are still yet to return. every year we wait the journey becomes a little longer.
in honour of this relationship and the moon’s gentle migration i have created ‘departure’ - a life-long drawing/measurement series, documenting the additional distance that would need to be travelled should we choose to return.
each year on december 14, a new drawing is added to the body of work. as of today at 5:55pm there are now forty-five drawings that collectively measure 1m 70.1cm.
after numerous requests this year i have also decided to also begin a second edition of ‘departure’ in which individual years / measurements will be sold separately (the original edition will remain as an unbroken set from 1972 - ). this second edition will also begin in 1972 with only one drawing made for every year (each drawing will be titled ‘departure - *year*’, with one new work becoming available on dec 14, 5:56pm est each year). if you would be interested in purchasing one please dm for details indicating which specific year is of interest! xx
