#PowerpuffGirls | This was the 2nd biggest project I built as a developer and in record time, about 8 weeks. (checkout my story to try it out yourself) There was me and one other full time developer on the project. We inherited this from another agency, which meant we had to get familiar with someone else’s code base. (FUNFACT in the real #worldofprogramming you get dropped into other peoples code bases all the time)
__
This project uses #VueJS Jade Roots #NodeJS #AWS S3 Lambda. I was familiar with one of those, NodeJS. I had to hurry and get familiar with the rest in order to get the project up and running. It took me a couple of days or testing older framework versions and dealing with s3 permissions but I figured it out.
__
We learned that VueJS was very similar to React and should be structured in a similar component based work flow, which saves time and code reuse. We utilized Lambda to generate the avatar and s3 to hold all the svgs.
In life we are given the different pieces but it is up to us to figure out how they go together. Don’t let the fear of the unknown or uncertainty hold you back from building and creating awesome things 👩‍💻💥

Do you plan how you're going to implement a solution with code before you start writing it?
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
.
I have a mental checklist of things I do before I ever start building out functionality. Some things require all steps, some a few. Here's how I do it!
.
1.⚙️ Check that I understand what I'm about to work on and why. What's the problem I'm solving? Why is this important? Who does it impact?
.
2. 🧠 Brainstorm possible solutions. Have I done something similar previously? Is one possible solution more cost effective than another? Often times there are multiple ways to solve a single problem and usually it comes down to doing the best I can with the information I have at the time.
.
3. 📝 Document the things I know I need to do. Do I need to save something to the database? Do I need to change what's displayed based on a user interaction? I often do this in a checklist in Trello. It helps me remember things and creates a level of transparency to the team about the details of what's been done.
.
4.❓Document my unknowns. This is often limited by what I know I don't know meaning there may be something that I dont know I'm missing. But it's still good to make note of things I'll need to know and then make a point to get the answers.
.
5. 💻 Write out todos in my editor! If I know something is going to be logic intensive or have special cases, I'll write out what I need to do in a comment. Often times editors recognize todos and highlight them like they do any other keywords and allow you to search by them.
.
6. ⌨️ And last but not least, code!! 🎉

Today was a good programming day, managed to do quite a lot of work... And I am planning to sit and do more later on. .
After some things happened today while working i have a few thoughts on freelancing Vs. Working in a company. .
Many people start from freelancing and then getting the job as a developer, but I think that getting a job as soon as possible is essential and the best way to become a skilled developer.
.
The amount of great and awesome support i get from my fellow developers is priceless. I had a problem today with navigation which I shared on my story. I shared it within my team Slack channel and 2 of my coworkers helped me fix this issue in less than 10 minutes.
And I've brew working on it for more than 1 hour...
.
This is just one situation and there are many more of them.
This is an awesome way to make productive work and constant progress. Talking with other, more skilled people helps you grow faster than you'd do it by yourself. .
This kind of problems I had could probably take countless hours if I were doing it by myself. That's why I think that before getting into freelancing it's mandatory to work somewhere for a few years. .
I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go before considering doing freelancing, I feel that this way is much better for me. What do you think about it? 😊
