Dumbo and Timothy Q. Mouse hanging out by the Magic Kingdom fountains!

So today’s post won’t be about Walt Disney World specifically. But rather, about the recent announcement regarding Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+.
•
It has been officially announced that “Song of the South” and the Jim Crow scene from “Dumbo” will NOT be available for streaming on Disney+. SotS is unsurprising as Disney has acted like the movie doesn’t exist for years! Well, aside from Splash Mountain of course. 😂 But the scene from Dumbo not being available certainly surprises me.
•
If you’re unfamiliar with the scene from Dumbo, a crow named Jim Crow (and his buddies) find Dumbo and Timothy Mouse sleeping high up on a branch of a tree. Confused as to how they got up there, Jim Crow suggests “Maybe you flew up!” Long story short, they sing “When I See An Elephant Fly”, and Jim Crow gives Dumbo his black feather “the magic feather” to help teach him how to fly.
•
I understand why Disney wants to separate itself from seemingly racist content. But I honestly don’t think the scene is that bad, and it’s a pivotal scene in the film. How are they going to reconcile the fact that in one scene Dumbo drinks himself into Pink Elephants on Parade, and in the next he’s jumps off a building with a magic feather we know nothing about? Are they going to remove the feather all together? I mean, the Jim Crow scene is a 10 minute scene towards the end of a 63 minute movie. That’s a huge chunk!

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the scene aside from the name of the crow. How do you guys feel about this? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Dumbo teaches us that if we believe in ourselves and with the help of those who love us, we can get up and take flight.
