(Yes: you will need to select the one-payment option in order to use this code.) The sale will end on New Year's Day.⠀
⠀
This code is also available to use toward a gift. DM me in order to arrange for a beautiful gift certificate to be emailed to a person of your choice on the date of your choice.⠀
⠀
A few words about Rawness of Remembering:⠀
⠀
“After months of suffering, I realized I had to do something to help myself heal. I’d had my eye on Rawness of Remembering for a while; this seemed like the time to do it. Signing up proved to be the best possible choice I could have made for myself.⠀
⠀
The coursework became a nightly appointment with my psyche and an outlet for the chaos I’d been swallowing. My journal–and, by extension, I–became someone to turn to at a time when I had no one. I was able to examine and then challenge my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. I rediscovered the pleasure of putting words and images on paper. The power of creating and caring for myself in that time was incredible.⠀
⠀
Things are better now, but I know that I’ll go back to the lessons again and again in the future.” — KATE H.⠀
⠀
To find out more about the course, visit here: http://www.esmewang.com/rawness. (Link in profile.) Again: that coupon code is JOURNALPOWER.⠀

I've tea, inadvertently dipped brushes, stories, work, and time. I must remind myself of that when I'm especially anxious, which seems to be common this season: I have time. I may be fretful to get my work made and shop updated, but I can't let it take the delight from what I do.

A reminder to you too, should you need it.

Some waves are huge and frightening. Others are lovely and gentle. We relish the ones that make us feel at ease and rail against the ones that scare us.
*
Feelings come in waves. So do all of life’s events. We cling to the ones that we like and reject the ones that we don’t. We think we have control. If we “make” things perfect (through exercise, food intake, quantity of friends, money in the bank, relationships, etc) then bad things won’t happen. If we worry enough, then we are safe. At the end of the day, and the point of Machado’s words (I believe) is that all of the “things” we think give us control over our destiny - including fear, especially fear - just don’t. Some things we just have to ride out. All feelings -good and hard - pass. All of the moments in our daily lives also end.
*
I was worried about this latest doctor’s visit but now it’s over. Things are stable(!!) and I’ll go back for re-testing in 6 months. The visit that had me so nauseous with anxiety this morning is done. I rode the feelings, time passed, and here I am on the other side. And the point of this rambling post? Control what you can which is to say keep swimming. And trust I’ll be there practicing some sad looking backstroke with you. 🙌🏻🌊

If the day already feels like too much and if you’re struggling to stay afloat, take 15 seconds and have tea with me. Breathe in for 4 gentle counts and out for 8 gentle counts. Watch the steam dancing in the sunlight and be here now.
*
P.S. Born and raised in NYC, a good cup of black coffee has always been my jam but lately anti-inflammatory, liver and stomach healing teas (nettle, dandelion, peppermint, ginger) have been calling me and, since I believe in intuitive eating, I’m paying attention. Nettle has a grassy flavor, almost like vegetable broth, and pairs well with savory foods. In addition to reducing inflammation in the gut, it’s helpful for allergies and achy joints. Roasted dandelion is dark and bitter and goes well with sweet foods and is a traditional tonic for liver cleansing. Peppermint and ginger are both stomach and liver remedies and I think best on their own or right after a meal. Teas and foods that settle the stomach are also helpful for calming anxiety (bonus). Here’s to a peaceful day in a caffeinated world.

My favorite kind of self-care. Baked up a batch of maple crumb donuts (vegan, nut/dairy/egg/soy and refined sugar free) to take with us to visit friends this weekend. And now that my stomach is feeling a little better, perhaps one for, you know, quality control.
*
Made with einkorn wheat flour (an ancient, single grain, non-hybridized wheat that has less gluten and may be easier to digest for people who are sensitive - but still not appropriate for folks with celiac). *
1.5 cups einkorn wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tblsps melted unrefined coconut oil (butter or ghee if not vegan). Combine all ingredients and pipe (using a plastic gallon Ziploc with a small hole cut in the corner) into a greased donut pan. Sprinkle with crumb topping: 1/4 cup einkorn flour, 3 tablespoons coconut sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tblsp coconut oil, sprinkle of salt.
Bake for 13-15 minutes in 350 degree oven.

Current mood by one of my favorite poets.

Sometimes, when things feel entirely too much; when you’ve sought answers for so long and with so much energy that the word “exhausted” doesn’t really cut it; when you feel like Old Man River (best described in the incredible play The Boys in the Band as “tired of living and scared of dying”); then sometimes it’s a kind of freedom to say “I don’t know.” To throw up your hands and just let the answer be what has always seemed like a non-answer: I don’t know. Because who really does? And can’t that be ok? Not to sound like a street corner philosopher with low blood sugar (though a snack would be nice), but the more we seek when seeking is just traveling the same old thought paths, the less new information we find.
*
I just finished with the blood test and won’t have answers until next week. In other words, I don’t know how it went or what will happen next. I haven’t for the last 10 years of too many medical tests and follow ups. Doctors have routinely uttered irritating tropes such as “watchful waiting” and “tincture of time.” When you’re talking about cancer, those can feel like fighting words. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned: I’m ok with not knowing right now because I will know at some point. The challenge is to sit with the not knowing and not drown in worry - the least helpful of feelings. So...a few 4/8 breaths and a cup of cocoa from the hospital’s remarkably excellent machine and off I go. Let’s “not know” together. Sometimes what comes is a gift not a disaster.

COCOA FOR CHALLENGING TIMES (dairy/sugar/nut/soy/seed free)
*
See what I did (tried to do) there? That’s a V! For voting! Spelled in cacao nibs! 🙄So...if you too are feeling anxious (what’s up Election Day) and exhausted (thanks daylight savings time), here’s a delicious cup of cocoa that consists only of ingredients intended to relax and reduce inflammation. No sugar, no dairy, no artificial milks. High magnesium cocoa for tight muscles and lowering blood pressure, a little bit of coconut oil (yes a saturated fat but also contains lauric acid that may help fight off viral infections and also makes this cocoa more satiating, stabilizing blood sugar, curbing hunger), and gut-healing protein from gelatin to boot. And whose gut couldn’t use some healing right now.
*
It’s easy to get triggered right now, but remember that fight/flight/freeze is EMERGENCY mode and isn’t needed at this point. Now is the time for focus and good judgment. That requires that your body be as chill as possible so your brain can do its job. Warming, easily digestible foods are calming and help you to think more sharply.
*
12 oz hot (almost boiling) water
1 tblsp pasture raised unsweetened gelatin powder. I used @greatlakesgelatin
2 tblsp unsweetened cocoa powder. I used @santabarbarachocolate
1 tsp unrefined coconut oil
Cinnamon to taste
*
Blend on high speed until frothy and sprinkle top with cacao nibs, more cinnamon, turmeric or ginger (if you’re feeling wild and for more anti-inflammatory benefits).
*
Sip, breathe, vote, and then step away from the news/phone/computer for a little while. Be gentle with yourself. Tomorrow will bring what it brings and worry, as we know, won’t change the outcome. As always, I’m practicing with you.

I’m in an interesting place with the new novel: mainly, we are getting to know one another, & I have no idea where this relationship is going.⠀
⠀
As I mentioned earlier, my words for the remainder of 2018 are QUIET CREATION. I plan to make the most of this as possible.⠀
⠀
I’m deep into a mastermind program with @courageandclarity for business-building.⠀
⠀
I’m wrapping up my new website redesign and cannot wait to share it with y’all.⠀
⠀
I have a new short story coming out in a magazine I love this winter. ⠀
⠀
Promotional stuff is starting for The Collected Schizophrenias.⠀
⠀
What is the rest of the year looking like for you? Do you have words or phrases to guide you through November and December? & do you have a Word ready for 2019?⠀

(Photo by @jacquelyntierney) I’m finally getting deeper into the second novel—at least, I think I might not toss this one. Who knows! And we’re three months away from The Collected Schizophrenias coming out, which is nervous-making and exciting. ⠀
⠀
My phrase for the remaining months of 2018 is Quiet Creation. I want to go down my rabbit hole & write & make & do my pet portrait commissions & write, write, write. I have a beloved story coming out this winter with a literary magazine I’ve been reading since I was in high school (!). ⠀
⠀
I look forward to 2019, however tentatively. Tonight I will see Mitski perform! Quiet, quiet, & quieter still.

Still life lunch from Friday Fridge: fresh figs, @navitasorganics cacao powder and raw cacao nibs, @manitobaharvest hemp protein, @greatlakesgelatin collagen mixed with a bit of hot water to make a chocolate coating for the figs. Full of fiber and protein and easy to digest and warm and calming and tastes like dessert.
*
Some green tea in the mug. Last of the apples in the bowl. Rain outside. Tired and achy body inside. All perfectly capturing current mood.
*
When the world feels like too much, simplify what you can including meals. Stress slows digestion and can create cravings that are actually indicators of needed nutrients. Today I was craving sweets which usually happens when I’m tired and anxious (“tired and wired”). But since sugar only exacerbates fatigue and inflammation, I knew that what I was actually craving was nourishing foods that would naturally support my muscles and nervous system. Cocoa is an excellent source of magnesium that can ease muscle tension and promote relaxation. Figs are high in fiber (to promote satiety and support elimination) and potassium, another necessary mineral, that is of particular importance for muscle contraction, heart function, and nerve-impulse transmission and can help prevent stroke, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Green tea is full of antioxidants. And I’ve heard that staring at an apple in a bowl magically fixes the sorry state of things and makes everyone VOTE.
*
I hope your day is light and your heart and belly are full.

An easy way to practice self-regulation (aka to chill out when emotions are running too high) is to scan your body for any spot that feels tight and then...relax that spot or spots. We all hold tension in our bodies. Constricted muscles are a sign that the brain is moving into fight/flight/freeze. By simply relaxing our muscles, we signal the brain and body that everything is ok.
*
Right now S.O.S (Stop, Orient Yourself, Self Check). Where are you holding tension? Shoulders? Neck? Stomach? Legs? Find a spot and let it go. Breathe in gently for 4 counts and exhale gently for 8 counts. Notice that the fire brewing inside of you has subsided even a little bit. Even if it comes right back. Just keep locating spots and letting them go.
*
As always I’m practicing with you.

This breakfast cookie is one I’ve made before, but it’s the topping - with a bit of gut healing and detoxifying ingredients (activated charcoal, collagen peptides) - that’s fresh and dare I say exciting. Frosting inspired by the “moon goo” at the extraordinary @frankieandjos
*
Breakfast cookie: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine 1/2 cup tahini, 1/3 cup coconut nectar, 1 tblsp vanilla, 1/2 cup spelt flour, 3/4 cup spelt flakes, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/3 cup chocolate chips (I used @santabarbarachocolate 100% unsweetened and @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate chips). Roll into balls and press down (they don’t spread). Bake for 15 minutes. Or don’t. The dough is also incredible and would be a great ice cream topping or just a straight outta the fridge snack.
*
Charcoal and collagen chocolate frosting (not vegan because of the collagen): 2 heaping tablespoons unsweetened @navitasorganics cacao powder, 2 tablespoons @greatlakesgelatin collagen peptides, 1/2 capsule of activated charcoal (I used @natureswaybrands), sweetener to taste (optional), sprinkle of cinnamon (optional).
*
More devastation in the news today. There’s so much work to be done and we are all being forced to swallow so much pain. It isn’t wrong to take care of yourself, it’s a necessity. Especially if you want to have the strength to keep going and help others. Take care of your gut.

Fear serves a purpose: it keeps us out of harm’s way. It’s normal to experience the physical symptoms of fear (heart racing, sweating, nausea, pupils dilating, etc) when a threat - a speeding car, a person screaming at or pushing us, a tiger baring its teeth - is present. The point of our fear response - also known as fight, flight, freeze - is to protect us from an IMMEDIATE threat that might, in a worst case scenario, cause death. BUT when the fear response activates constantly, like a smoke detector that turns on when you purposefully light a candle or just turn on your oven, that’s called anxiety and it’s not actually serving a purpose. Instead of helping us focus and quickly escape threat, anxiety just makes things fuzzy and unpleasant. Since we can’t throw out our own internal smoke detector, we just have to teach it to be less sensitive and re-learn how to activate when we are in danger of being harmed, not when we have a stressful work project or if we forgot to buy eggs (true story). Fear is a normal, learned response. We learn to fear things that can hurt us. We are primed for survival and sometimes our brain can generalize that fear response so that even triggers/reminders generate the same fear. One easy way to begin to re-wire your smoke detector is to ask the question: “am I in danger RIGHT NOW?” when you start to feel scared. If there’s no immediate threat, only “coulds” (but my boss could shoot me if I’m late to work), then try a few 4/8 breaths. You are ok right now. You are safe right now. Even if you are someone living with chronic or acute illness and the threat (your body) feels always present, not all symptoms are emergent. Making your body a safe place to reside will help with healing and with just living. As always, I’m practicing with you.

That “I almost forgot the homemade cranberry chocolate chip bundt cake in the fridge” Friday feeling.

Gluten / egg / soy / refined sugar free. Based on @feastingonfruit incredible chocolate raspberry bundt. I cut the maple syrup in half, used @nancysyogurt grass fed plain whole milk yogurt, made my own seed milk using 2 heaping tablespoons of tahini and 1/2 cup water, doubled up the vanilla, added frozen unsweetened cranberries, and @santabarbarachocolate unsweetened 100% chocolate. Easing into the weekend like a well-fed boss.

Inktober day 24.

Image description: There are three people. On the left is a person with short hair. They wear a tshirt with RESIST written on it, trousers, and a jacket. A brain sits on their right shoulder. In the middle a person with dark, tightly curled hair and dark toned skin holds a brain in their hands. They wear a shirt and long pants. On the right is a person with a short asymmetrical haircut. They wear a jacket, pants, and high boots. A brain sits on their lap. Their right hand is raised in the air. They are in a wheelchair. Above them is written: FIGHT FOR OUR BRAINS' WELLBEING.

View from my very early train to Portland. I’ve been making this trip weekly since the beginning of the year and, even though it’s expensive and exhausting to travel eight hours round trip (usually in one day), I wouldn’t change my decision because it’s allowed me to continue to work in-person with my Portland clients versus remotely (as I do with my New York based clients) and visit, however briefly, with cherished friends. I won’t be traveling weekly to Portland beginning in November - that decision having been expedited by recent medical challenges and the need to focus attention on opening a Seattle office (seeing as how that’s where I live ;). When things feel chaotic as they often do with life changes and transitions, it’s helpful to remember that relationships can remain steady even when everything else feels completely unstable.
*
Take these trees and that sky for example. The mess of brown and green in the foreground is grass and land as seen in motion. But the eye is drawn to the steady. I am moving past those trees and sky at the same speed but somehow they look just the same. Because they ARE just the same (science!). Even though I’m swirling in a tin can doesn’t mean that they are too.
*
Consistent, affirming, loving parenting is key for young children to learn emotional regulation and the same extends to adults, especially adults living with chronic illness because the body never “feels” safe and/or survivors of childhood trauma because relationships don’t either. If you are a survivor, use your 5 senses to find your safety and remember those one or two (or more if you’re lucky) folks who are constant sources of support and love. With whom do you “feel” safe? And if you are a friend, partner, family member, colleague, therapist, be consistent. We can all be the tree.

Foggy grey cool Monday morning with all the potential for bringing on the Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D). Stop the sinking of your ship with this homemade dairy/nut/soy/sugar free cocoa. 2 tblsps organic unsweetened cacao powder, 1 tsp unrefined coconut oil, 1 tblsp @greatlakesgelatin unsweetened gelatin powder, cinnamon to taste, 12 oz very hot water, blended until frothy in my budget version of the Nutri-bullet. On the side, the very last of my @santabarbarachocolate unsweetened chocolate discs (insert sad face here) because otherwise there would have been many more discs on the plate than this very reasonable portion.
*
Organic unsweetened cocoa/chocolate/cacao are rich in naturally occurring compounds that positively affect mood and memory. Cocoa is also a great source of magnesium (and iron in case you were anemic and curious) which makes it both relaxing and helpful for digestive challenges. Plus it’s just tasty and soul soothing. Let’s hope the week is as kind. Lots of love to you.

This started out as a very serious post about the benefits of holding a warm cup for anxiety and panic and turned into something that looks like it was clipped from the white lady handbook - all rainbows and fuzzy light and a sort of sedated looking smile. Note to self: don’t ever take yourself too seriously. That’s a grounding technique as well.
*
But no matter how ludicrous the image, the message is the same. A simple technique to ground yourself when you’re starting to feel triggered is as close as your next cup of coffee or tea. Hold a warm cup (not too hot). Feel the warmth extend into your hands. Notice if you’re holding your breath. If so, try to exhale slowly, feeling the warmth of the steam release from the liquid.
*
The rationale for holding something warm when we are starting to enter fight/flight/freeze mode is that we tend to get cold hands and feet as blood is directed to escape danger. For all of us living with dysautonomia, POTS, and/or Raynaud’s ice cold hands that come out of nowhere are a daily occurrence. Warming the hands signals the brain that all is ok and can help redirect blood flow. And of course a good 8 count exhale let’s the parasympathetic nervous system know to shut off the alarm.
*
Clearly I’m practicing with you ;)
