Racism. sexism. homophobia. transphobia. ageism. childism. ableism. speciesism.
as animal rights activists, we call upon non-vegans to reject speciesist beliefs about animals. we ask them to recognize their own speciesist programming, borne of their culture and upbringing, and to actively rewire their thinking.
we have an obligation to do the same. with any form of outdated, oppressive, and harmful belief system.
no one wants to admit that they have any form of -ism or -phobia. but remember that actions speak louder than words. it doesn’t matter how enlightened and inclusive we claim to be. if our behaviour is harmful, then our words are simply wishful thinking.
if you become aware of your own harmful behaviours (or someone alerts you to them), then please take this opportunity to introspect. educate yourself. talk to the very people who are affected by similar harmful actions and really listen to their perspective. put yourself (or your partner, or best friend) in their shoes and imagine how that would feel. admit you make a mistake, and commit to making sure this never happens again. spread awareness about ending the very form of oppression in which you once participated, so that others may learn from your mistakes.
and more importantly, show others that if you can change your beliefs, they can change theirs. we’ve all done it (at least, those of us who haven’t been vegan since birth). if we can reprogram our speciesist beliefs, we can surely change our sexist, racist, transphobic, homophobic, ageist, ableist, and childist beliefs too.
this is the next leap in societal evolution. it’s time to end all forms of oppression and injustice across the world. (and if you find it too overwhelming, check out my post from yesterday).
