Skull tower was built after the battle for liberation of niš in 1809, by turkish general hurshi pasha out of skulls of defeated serb rebels.
the monument was built as a warning to anyone rising against the ottoman empire, but the effect was the opposite of what was expected, and the skull tower has become a symbol of resistance and struggle for freedom.
the skull in the last picture belongs to the rebel commander stevan sinđelić. he fired a shot into a gunpowder keg at the fully stocked gunpowder room, blowing up himself and his entire (outnumbered) army, as well as much greater number of the ottoman soldiers.
