Goalkeeping double standards! .
if there's 1 dept in the #supereagles
squad yet to taste any kind of transition since #russia, it would undoubtedly be the #goalkeeping
dept. while credit goes to rohr for gradually easing out players obviously surplus to requirement in other departments as the defense & m/field, the same enthusiasm hasn't exactly been replicated with the men between the sticks. transition has been avoided while stagnation in that dept is apparent. it'll be counterproductive in just a few years if it isn't addressed. .
if "form" is truly the yardstick deployed in earning call-ups, then, just like isaac success, sebastian osigwe undoubtedly deserves an invite. and if lack of form is the yardstick for non-invitation, then, just like elderson echiejile, ikechukwu ezenwa should be overlooked. while some critics might hope to invalidate osigwe's claim for national team berth by playing the "inferior league tune", fact remains the gk-dept is a peculiar one globally where there's an apparent bias for #europeans
ahead of #africans. it would take an extraordinary consistent effort backed by national team presence for a colored goalkeeper to be given a glance in mainstream #european
leagues. as such, it will be unfair to put outfield players & goalies through same litmus test or yardstick for national team call-up. with the evident global bias against colored goalies, we should be more concerned about "competence", "consistency/form", "gametime" & "age", while we should bother less about the league the goalie plies his trade! it is clear we are not in the 90s where we had a large pool to pick from, we're facing a dearth of goaltenders presently, hence, we must be realistic with our expectations, shun sentiments & politicking in inviting players. .
based on current form, osigwe merits a call-up ahead of ezenwa who isn't even a 1st choice in his club- #enyimba! the presence of osigwe in the mix would x-ray uzoho's competence even further while theophilus afelokhai who bosses ezenwa at club level should be prioritized!
