The Bouy r+r performance today, which I saw for #eyestowardsthedove @katyhamer today was beautiful, graceful and incredibly inspiring. It was a day of indulgent mythical fantasy. #dance #dancenyc #performanceart #performance #art #brooklyn #bouy @vivasoudan #bouyranar #feminism #feministart #bouyrr @artits6666

In 2002/2003 I went to the Graham Avenue section of Williamsburg to do a studio visit with artist @pagmi and spied Caffe Capri, an Italian coffee shop. Being a grade-A Italophile, I knew that I needed to live in the neighborhood and have done so for 8 years! Well, times change and tattooer @mark__cross has opened @muddguts an art gallery & boutique, with the same aesthetic as the original venue. Cross, also of @rosetattooparlour is showing photographs by @blakebyblake selling t-shirts and hoodies and has a line-up of other exhibitions and events planned. Read about it in Eyes Towards the Dove and visit to see how the next generation can evolve and intervene in a space with grace. ✌️Scroll for a pic of our friends at Model T Meats. #linkinbio

I spoke to artist @matthewsweesy about his artwork on the occasion of his exhibition @dianerosenstein • “For example, I take, say an arm, and cut apart not the actual arm, but the idea of the arm. In this process, questions arise possibly along the lines of, ‘Does the sun have arms? What if the sun has my arms and my arms are the sun’s rays?’ I admit and am comfortable with the notion that this sounds very childish. However, in the reassembly that unfolds by answering these questions, identities begins to blur, empathy grows and a feeling of connectedness increases. I feel become part of the gear-workings of the universe instead of isolated within my own anatomy.” ~ Matthew Sweesy 🌞 #linkinbio 🌞

...”However, something started to change once I joined Instagram; paragraphs were replaced by images and captions. Rather then invest 8 hours writing an article gathering photos and captions, I could now post a photograph or a carousel of photographs with a short caption and get a similar result, feedback from my peers and colleagues. At first this felt like reward enough but as time has gone by, I’ve grown distant from words, the delicious descriptions of art that I so often am drawn to and fueled by. The withdrawal has been painful. In the discomfort I’ve found mostly silence. Images in the realm of social media allow for dialogue and engagement but are at once enlightening and limiting.” @katyhamer • •
I ❤️ art & writing with all my being but decided to write a candid article on my struggles with the art industry, freelancing and motivation in the face of having @instagram as an option. (Artwork: Donna Huanca, Installation detail from “Water Scars” at Valentin, Paris, 2015 @ruaminx )

🕊🕸Not sure if that’s a dove who’s met its demise in the mouth of a panther but either way...a very Eyes Towards the Dove image. 🕊🔪Walton Ford, “New Watercolors” opens tomorrow @vitoschnabelgallery in St. Moritz. New watercolors even though if you zoom in the date says 1933. Very clever, Mr. Ford...very clever. • (Image: Walton Ford, Die Königin, 2018, Watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper) •

“There is a dialogue in the New York art scene that has faded. Many of the in-depth talks held in downtown apartments at all hours of the night accompanied cigarettes and beer between young artists passionate about making things, are now more likely to happen in art schools and at residencies. As the cost of living has gone up, everyone has gotten busier and while those connections and conversations will never stop, they change. Today we have a multitude of virtual relationships. Social media is an evolving platform that brings people together yet lacks tactile engagement.” ~Katy Diamond Hamer Read more of my take on “Digging for Diamonds in the Disco” organized by Tony Cox ( @ronlittles ) featuring @motherfuture @lousyleo and others. 💎💍 💎 #linkinbio #carousel

🔺 Last night I went to the opening of “Songs for Sabotage” the 2018, fourth edition of the @newmuseum Triennial just to see these paintings by Janiva Ellis (@ducatimist b.1987). The artist reimagines the portrayal of black & brown bodies through history until this very moment with her own painted filter. She channels those who have come before including Marlene Dumas, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker & artists of the Italian Renaissance. The figure is back in contemporary art with a vengeance and in most instances it is easy, flat and digestible. Ellis’ work is multi-layered and functions as a portal into a much larger dialogue around race, gender, identity and a sense of place. 🙏🕊🦁 #eyestowardsthedove #mustsee 🔻
