This group of youngsters in the namib desert realized that the easiest way of getting food is begging for it on the road. due to a drought that lasted for several years the wild horses couldn’t find anything to eat anymore. this small herd figured that tourists always carry some food and tried to take advantage of it. it worked: tourists would stop their cars and fed them with anything they had: carrots, bread, pepper, sweets, salad, whatever attracted the horses and kept them long enough to take a photo. most of these foods aren’t good for the gastrointestinal tract of horses, especially not when they are already undernourished. the local people try to educate tourists not to feed the horses on the road, because they rise the number of deaths through colics, stomach rotation or poisoning. also the tourists actions rise the number of accidents and road kills, because the wild horses loose their fear of vehicles on their search for food. the road is the only one which connects the inner land with lüderitz and trucks drive past very fast, most of them not even slowing down when they see horses on the side.
