Oscars week: best actress. (these are not predictions)
this year has been a competitive one for the best actress category, the nominees are five actresses that have done an outstanding job bringing their characters to life and deserve their nominations, sadly, i wasn’t able to watch one of the most praised performances in this category, so i will have to wait if i can see it before sunday.
almost every prediction was right but there was something surprising yet enchanting, and that was ruth negga’s nomination, others like the sag awards completely ignored her even though she was the star of loving, i am glad she was recognized by the academy and even though she is not a favorite, her performance will be remembered.
two previous academy award winners are nominated as well, natalie portman disappeared and jackie kennedy came to life, her portrayal of the former first lady of the united states during and after living a traumatic event deserved the nomination for best actress, she is not a favorite, but i can see her getting her second oscar on sunday night; meryl streep portrayed florence foster jenkins on the movie of the same name, her good performance got her a 20th nomination, her chances of winning are low, but after receiving two oscars before (one as best actress and the other as a best supporting actress) and the cecil b demille award at the golden globes this year i don’t think mrs. streep will be disappointed for not winning.
like every year there’s a favorite, and this year the favorite is emma stone for playing mia in la la land, she has been getting all the “main” awards, but will she get the oscar for best actress? her performance was good, we saw her talent for singing and dancing and we could also feel her sadness, frustration, excitement and happiness in la la land; but in my opinion this is one of the most overrated performances this year, emma stone is indeed an amazing actress that deserves an oscar and will win one someday, but i just think this is not the correct role.
