The two video clips above are from the popular hbo series "the pacific" which covered the individual stories of multiple marines during world war 2 in the pacific theater. this specific episode is about the battle of peleliu which was one of the bloodiest of the war, costing thousands of american lives. the island had no real strategic importance but cost the lives of thousands of american men which sent the american public into an outcry of outrage. many fathers and mothers did not understand why their sons had to die for a useless island. they us military had no real explanation at the time for the event except it was just essential to the war effort. their questions about their sons would not be answered until decades later. in the first clip we can actually see some tactics the marines used during their island hopping campaign. most of you know how i talk about how the marines would clear bunkers and now you can see it! they'd either drop a grenade in, use a flamethrower, or do both but the flamethrower was the preferred method. in the second clip you can see the actor who is depicting us marine eugene sledge trying to keep the injured marine calm and k**l a japanese soldier charging at them. eugene sledge was one of the greatest wartime authors of all time and the what he wrote during combat have become an essential part of us military history. this is because they gave a firsthand account of the tactics, experiences, and loss in the pacific during world war 2. his writings have been made into a book which i recommend you check out, i forgot the name but just like up: eugene sledge book on your preferred browser. these clips belong to hbo and i'm not trying to steal them.
