in an interview with buzzfeed, aisha mohamed said that a lot of her art focuses on blackness and black women.
mohamed said: "this passion of mine actually first came about in my tumblr days when i was 16 [or] 17. i made a lot of 'fan art' but eventually grew out of it.
"it was only a few months ago that i picked photoshop up again, but this time focusing on something very important to me – black women."
"i couldn't help but notice that i never saw myself reflected in any of my favourite pieces. it was an isolating feeling. in a way, this piece was about reclaiming this very white space and saying, 'we're here and we're beautiful.'"

On the eighth day of #girlmas, we're celebrating marley dias. marley is the brainchild behind the #1000blackgirlbooks campaign.
as said by the guardian: "eleven-year-old marley dias’s appeal #1000blackgirlbooks, which gathered huge support, grew from her frustration at only being given stories ‘about white boys and their dogs’ marley dias, who goes to st cloud elementary school in west orange, new jersey, began her drive in november after she told her mother she was tired of the books that she was being given at school. her mother, janice johnson dias, asked her what she was going to do about it, and dias decided to launch her drive with the help of her mother, who is the co-founder of the social action organisation grassroots community foundation."

as said in the guardian: "style rookie, the blog she started aged 11, introduced her to her heroes (miuccia prada, karl lagerfeld, john galliano and lady gaga, who called her "the future of journalism") and gave way in 2010 to editing rookie, an online magazine for girls. within a week they'd had more than 1m page views. they publish three times a day: after school, after dinner and before bed, with a regular column called "literally the best thing ever" and contributions from people like sarah silverman and lena dunham. "it's amazing how permanent virginity feels," dunham wrote for them in march, "and then how suddenly inconsequential." @tavitulle

On the sixth day of #Girlmas, we're celebrating the girls behind Girls Against Groping at Gigs. (@girls.against) Throwback to when we interviewed them! Hannah, Ava, Anna, Anni and Bea make up Girls Against Groping at Gigs. They are a group of intersectional feminist teenagers and music fans, who have joined forces to raise awareness, and ultimately end, the shocking commonplace of sexual assault in gig crowds. They are working with bands, venues, and security companies aiming to make gig crowds a safer space for girls. As a long-admirer of the girls and the movement, I was excited to interview Hannah Camilleri for Girl Museum.
Groping at gigs, generally speaking, affected girls more often. Speaking to Hannah, she pins this to sexism within society. “Women have always been seen as the subordinate, inferior and weaker sex. People think that it’s okay to sexually harass women because we’re taught to be demure and not say anything. We’re not supposed to be the sex that’s going to lash out and be violent. Obviously these are extreme gender stereotypes but this entire issue has [its] roots in them.”

On the fifth day of #girlmas, we're celebrating isabel (16) and caroline (15), the teen entrepreneurs who own their own successful business, da bomb bath fizzers. "growing up, we always loved using fizzing bath bombs. but we couldn't help but feel a little bit sad when a bomb finished dissolving because, well... it was gone. so we decided to create our own line of bath bombs that each contain a fun surprise in the middle! now isn't that way more exciting than a bath bomb that just disappears? (we think so!) we also wanted to keep our bombs as natural as possible, so we make them ourselves using just a few simple, high quality ingredients." #girlmas #12daysofgirlmas #girlpower #girlhood #grlpwr #girl #feminist #feminism #girlgang

Still feeling festive and enjoying #12DaysofGirlmas? Junior Girl Sage Daugherty has reviewed Miracle on 34th Street on our blog.

Still feeling festive and enjoying #12daysofgirlmas? junior girl sage daugherty has reviewed miracle on 34th street on our blog. "one of my all time favorite christmas movies is miracle on 34th street, and i watch it every year (both versions) without fail. so naturally, when i got home for christmas, i made my sister watch both of them with me — the black and white 1947 version with natalie wood and maureen o’hara and the 1994 version with mara wilson, which is the version we grew up watching.
in the original version, doris walker (maureen o’hara) is in charge of the macy’s thanksgiving day parade, and is at her wits end after having to fire the parade’s santa for getting d***k before the parade. she encounters a man with a snowy white beard who introduces himself as kris kringle, and gets him to be the parade’s santa. the parade reception is so great that macy’s hires him to be the store santa for the remainder of the holiday period. fun fact about the film: edmund gwenn, who played kris kringle, actually was santa claus in the 1946 macy’s thanksgiving day parade!" read more at http://www.girlmuseum.org/review-miracle-34th-street/
