"but it’s not easy being quiet and good, it’s like hanging on to the edge of a bridge when you’ve already fallen over; you don’t seem to be moving, just dangling there, and yet it is taking all your strength." • alias grace by margaret atwood
🍂🍁☕️ on this blustery windy night, i am continuing this painting inspired by/an interpretation of alias grace, a novel based on a true story by 👑queen👑 margaret atwood (author of the handmaid's tale). the book is about a woman, grace, found guilty of m****r and the different ways people view her: she's either a simple, wholesome innocent put through an ordeal for crimes she didn't commit, or a crafty and clever murderess adept at manipulation. the book is so good because it's about more than this mystery: it's about society and the male gaze, how grace is used as an empty template on which the men in her life drape their assumptions, prejudices, diagnoses, desires and fears.
the two women in this 2x3 foot painting represent these differing perceptions of grace. you could try to guess from the expression which is which, but who could say? it won't stay like this forever, but i'm intrigued by the way one figure is coming forward from the surface in paint and the other is left hazy in shades of graphite.
this piece will be in the group show "little utopias" at @talongallery
this december, where all works will be celebrations of atwood's writing. i've never been this excited for a show. i'm so so here for the marriage of literature and art, it is my favorite.
now back to painting ❤️ #littleutopias #whpperfectpair #literatureandart #yummmm
