An order of chivalry does not go without a horse. thus, the order of the temple was intimately related to this animal. to begin with, a noble who was received in order could donate his horse. after 1140, there were many donors of the noble nobility bequeathing the knights templar.
the order furnished three horses to each of his knights, the maintenance of which was assured by a squire. the rule specifies that the brothers could have more than three horses, when the master authorized them. this measure was no doubt intended to prevent the loss of horses, so that the brothers always had three horses at their disposal.
