लाल शहर | Laal Shaher (The Red City)
.
.
I believe that every city has a colour. This colour is, sometimes, visible all around the city. For instance, the pink in Jaipur and the blue in Jodhpur. At other times the colour is a metaphor for the defining traits of the city. For example, my homecity Lucknow is turquoise (Firozi) and Mumbai is yellow! This, of course, is my own interpretation. In Delhi's case, it's both. Red is a colour that is visible all around here and also the colour that defines it. .
The red sandstone used in the Mughal structures like the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid, the Humayun's Tomb etc. The red of bricks used in the colonial era structures, especially the university, college, school and museum buildings. Also in the 'Sarkari daftars' as well as residences and quarters. The 'Geru' and terracotta red in the innumerable craft haats/bazaars and the parks here. The red of power that is so tangible in India's capital. The city that has been the seat of power and the centre of power-struggles for centuries. The red of mirch-masaledar food! The red of people's 'garam khoon', of passionate language and of road rage too! 😉
.
The red of Dilli shaher is rubbing off on me too and is reflecting in my winter ensembles. I've worn it thrice already. The sardi at this time is also more 'laal' than 'gulaabi' so it seems apt for the season 😉
Which of these three red ensembles is your favourite? Do share with me! Do you also feel that cities have colours? What are your thoughts?

Today I'm talking about one of the best books I read in 2018! This is absolutely one of my favorite books now. And I have written a really long blog post on it so it would mean a lot to me if you checked it out! Link is in the bio!
.
Also, the black journal below is my #bujo2019 and I love using it. It's by @disartisdcraftsstore ! And I am a regular patron of her works!
.
#qotd : any favourites in the #indianenglishliterature genre? I loved this one!
.
Title: An Atlas of Impossible Longing
Author: Anuradha Roy
Publisher: Picador USA
Genre: Historical fiction
Format: Hardcover
Language: English
No. of pages: 336

My review:

Thanks to my professor for lending me this book. “A veritable atlas. What rivers of desire, what mountains of ambition. Want, want, hope, hope, this is what your palm say, your palm is nothing but an atlas of impossible longings.” An Atlas of Impossible Longings is a story of loss, love, hope, longings and desires. This tapestry of human natures is so vivid and full of imagery that it takes one to the places and the people as the author describes them. The story is undoubtedly sad at times, but I personally applaud the author’s ability to write it without making the reader really depressed. There is a thread of old-world, pre-independence era nostalgia threading throughout the entire narrative.
