My father wasn’t known for his “accomplishments.” Meaning he never was some big business man or traveled the world. In fact he preferred sitting home. And really he never made that much money in his industry. ⠀
⠀
But if you heard my @tedx_official you will already know he was special for another reason. He was kind to everyone. While he didn’t physically say anything specific to us about life lessons. I watched him over the years and kept these unspoken lessons with me.⠀
⠀
I learned to over tip the kind service people, talk to everyone, smile and joke as much as possible, stand up for yourself and overall be a good human being.⠀
⠀
If I have to tell the truth, I would say that I wasn’t like that when he was alive. I was a teenager and these things sounded silly and useless to me at the time. We didn’t have a super lovey relationship but he was my dad and I held on to the things I learned.⠀
⠀
When he passed my Italian life started. And really so did my authentic self. I learned to go deeper with my thoughts and purpose. And I learned to carry these very important lessons with me. Both in NYC and Italy.⠀
⠀
I really do my best to recognize the people who make an effort. I spend less time seeing “who and what can benefit me”and more time connecting. I overtip and I express gratitude as much as possible. ⠀
⠀
It’s not easy to be yourself in a world that wants to criticize you and bring you down. Because sadly most people do not want you to succeed or to be happy. Because they themselves do know how to be happy. ⠀
⠀
But that shouldn’t stop you from being the better person as much as possible. Even if you get nothing out of it but a smile and a thank you.⠀
⠀
Sometimes I feel as if my dad’s purpose was only be here for a short time so he can pass these lessons onto me and my brother. So then we can pass this onto to others. In my case, maybe all of you.⠀
⠀
So if you get a chance check out my @tedx_official to learn more about my story (It’s in my highlights). Or if you can say a little pray of gratitude prayer for my father Joey Santoro tonight as he has touched the lives of many with his sacrifice and kind personality way beyond his years on earth!⠀

They form a part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley in the east. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

More things I’m reminded during my adventures in Italy this week: ⠀
⠀
1. When people say “bird’s eye view” in NY they probably are referring to a photo their drone picked up. In a place like the Amalfi Coast they are probably just referring to the view from there window. (Or in this case this photo is from ancient place that was once someone’s home).⠀
⠀
2. Bread does not make you gain weight. Try to argue with me on that. I won’t back down on this theory. 😂⠀
⠀
3. Speaking of bread. When they use “panino” here is literally can mean a piece of bread (not a sandwich). And just a reminder panino means one sandwich or piece of bread. The term “panini” refers to the plural form.⠀
⠀
4. Sweat and wind can be the cause of a flu, pulled muscle, a cold, a headache, and anything else really that exists in the medical world.⠀
⠀
5. Watermelon is called anguria in some places and cocomero in others. And most Italians can not tell you why they say one or the other or what is the actual true term for watermelon. This is the case with a lot of words. Hence why I still struggle with the language. 😂⠀
⠀
6. My love for Italy doesn’t diminish from year to year. It keeps getting strong. I hope to find a relationship like that... 🤔😉⠀
⠀
What else would you add about Italian life that is “outside” the norm for you? ⠀
