with their headquarters destroyed and the world held hostage, members of kingsman find new allies when they discover a spy organization in the united states known as statesman. in an adventure that tests their strength and wits, the elite secret agents from both sides of the pond band together to battle a ruthless enemy and save the day.
what a disappointment. even though kingsman: the golden circle desperately tries to up the ante, raise the stakes, heighten the drama, and accelerate the action, it never really amounts to anything fresh or clever. the humor was one of the more disappointing bits here; while it’s fun initially, it later develops into long, tedious set-ups for forgettable, unamusing punchlines. this is especially prevalent in julianne moore’s storyline. the film definitely felt like it was trying way too hard to be quirky with her character in an attempt to match samuel jackson’s villainous role in the last movie, resulting in a dull and unoriginal plotline that had way too much screen time.
it’s overlong, carries too many subplots, and its political overtones were strangely heavy-handed and too-in-your-face. there’s a point in the middle where the film comes to a halt and becomes an absolute slog; it’s hard to believe that the first film was just 12 minutes shorter because this one felt like it went on for a whole hour longer.
important characters, or so i thought, were killed off senselessly and with no tangible purpose to the point where it grew tiresome and became obnoxious. however, despite the lackluster script, problematic pacing, and paper-thin characters, one can’t deny that this movie is an entertaining ride. yes, it pales in comparison to the ‘kingsman: the secret service’, but there are things to about this sequel. for one, director matthew vaughn never does sequels; he didn’t do one for ‘x-men: first class’ or ‘kick-ass’, but he did one for kingsman and i’m glad he did primarily for his ability to pull off his signature, heavily stylized action set-pieces.
