Holy Week // Maundy Thursday
Today is the day that Jesus was betrayed. The Passover meal was in full swing, and the disciples had no clue what was about to happen. The man that they had known, followed, and loved for years now...would soon die.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
And of course, they completely miss the sincerity and symbolism in His words. “This bread is My body given for you...This cup is the new promise in My blood, which is poured out for you.”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
In other words: “As you eat this bread - as you realize that it maintains your life, fuels your energy, and sustains your focus - know that I will soon do this for you in greater ways. My body will be given for you.”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
“And this cup - a drink that you come across daily, a ‘must have’ in most of your meals, what refreshes your palette - this is like my blood. Soon enough, it will become a ‘must have’ in your life - something that you will need to come across daily. My blood will soon bring refreshing life into you like never before.”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
But they, like most of our wandering hearts and minds, overlooked and under-appreciated the deep power in Jesus’ words. Instead of seeking meaning and understanding, they became obsessively fixated on the last thing Jesus had said: “But woe to that man who betrays [Me]…”
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Instead of responding to the truth of Jesus’ words, they each responded to the selfish lies, prideful thoughts, and the fearful insecurities that were rooted deep in them. They wanted reassurance that they were great, that their status was secure, and that everyone else in the room knew it without question.

And honestly, I encounter this same mental frenzy quite often. God will speak a truth in my day and I quickly respond, not to the Lord’s work or words, but to my sinful and selfish reaction(s) to His words. I respond to the lies that I believe, the pride that I feed, the fears that jump out, and the many insecurities that I
hold in deep.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
But what happens is huge: My selfishness directs my attention away from God’s voice and onto the voice of my(self) - or whatever else fits: my “fear,” my “prideful wants,” my “selfish plans,” etc.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Today, as yourself: what am I responding to? #declareglory

Holy Week // The Canaanite Daughter
“Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.” (Matthew 15:21-28)
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Have you ever read this full miracle in Matthew 15? It is confusing and strange. Jesus is seemingly mean and un-characteristically rude. But what comes from it is amazing. We dive deeper into it in our #MiraclesStudy (which we have a giveaway for!). But below is a quick excerpt!
.
“This woman journey communicates over and over that our God’s ways are not our ways. And it proves that faith does not always feel like faith.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
I am reminded of Abraham. There was a moment in his life when God did something seemingly cold. He tells Abraham to kill his son; to travel up a mountain with his only boy and take his life. “Why God? How can you do this?,” we think. But Abraham takes the journey. He draws nearer and nearer to the commandment of God - despite his concerns.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
With every step forward, Abraham - much like this woman - displays a heart posture of humility and submission. And it did not feel like faith. But when we draw near to God, He draws near to us.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
And when Abraham obeyed with rationality, God saw the greatness of his faith. And when this was seen, God looked to his concerns and commanded him to spare Isaac’s life.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
This is the exact thing Jesus is doing. He tests her faith - knowing that it is there - and when it shows itself evidently, He grants her the concerns of her heart.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
When it seems like God is distant, press in more. When it feels like you have wailed long enough, find more to submit. Do not get overwhelmed with irrationalities. The testing of God, though much greater than our minds can fathom, is always in complete alignment with the faith He knows that we possess.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Today, let’s follow the lead of this woman.”

Holy Week // Prayer of Refocus
“Set your mind on things of above.” (Colossians 3:2)
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
// Today’s Prayer //
“O God the Holy Spirit,
When You first hovered over chaos,
order came to birth,
beauty robed the world,
fruitfulness sprang forth.
Move, I pray, upon my disordered heart;
Take away the sins of unruly desires and hateful lusts.
Lift the mists and darkness of unbelief;
Brighten my soul with the pure light of truth...
Fulfill in me the glory of thy divine offices;
Be my comforter, light, guide, sanctifier;
Take of the things of Christ and
show them to my soul;
Through You may I daily learn more of His love,
grace, compassion, faithfulness, beauty;
Lead me to the cross and show me His wounds,
the hateful nature of evil, the power of Satan;
May I there see my sins as
the nails that transfixed Him,
the cords that bound Him,
the thorns that tore Him,
the sword that pierced Him.
Help me to find in His death the
reality and immensity of His love.
Open for me the wondrous volumes
of truth in His, ‘It is finished’...
O Holy Spirit, deepen in me these saving lessons.
Write them upon my heart, that I my walk may
be sin-loathing, sin-fleeing, Christ-loving.
Amen.”
