Post 1/2: would i do it again? oh fu*k ya. the north face endurance challenge 50 miler, carving through gorgeous california trails just north of san fran, was one wild adventure. turn by turn we found ourselves in awe as we came in and out of the marine layer. okay... but here is the kicker... i followed the wrong arrows after a quick salty snack at the mile 23 aid station— even after confirming with volunteers i was good to go. one right turn, instead of going straight... was a big wrong turn when running 50 miles... jason was supposed to join me at 27.4. he was right where he was supposed to be, but i was not. i texted him at my version of 26 miles, stoked to be more than halfway done and still feeling really strong. knowing that i had 14.4 miles running with him, i was ready to rip! ...27.4 went by, and then 28 came. where the eff is stinson beach? my watch could be off— there was no reception for at least 1/2 the course. but then... @the_haas_1989
ran up on my tail... my wonderfully speedy @goodr
co-worker who had an elite bib for the race... this wasn’t right. “yo robbbyyy!” excited at first to see this dude crushing it. “we’re doing two loops of this?” ...”umm... no shelby...” shit. what does this mean? adrenaline spikes, i feel like i’m chasing time as i follow robby down to the next aid station. the chances of running into the one other person you know while on a course that spans 50 miles is pretty slim. so as frustrated as i was for all the components coming together in this moment, it was really cool getting to open up my stride, following a familiar face, and carrying myself to the next aid station with extreme urgency.
i start to shout, “i need someone with a radio now!” i explain the situation, find out some other dude made the same wrong right. i never found out what he ended up doing, and now i’m so curious if others fell victim of salty cravings at the cardiac hill aid station, then looking up to find a directional arrow meant for future mile 30.1.
