What country has this reached? Comment below for a chance to win one of 5 Shakespeare goodie boxes I put together from my recent trip! Good morning from the 554-year old Anne Hathaway's Cottage (early parts were built circa 1463!) in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Talk about the quintessential thatched cottage. It's incredible to think something of such age still stands.
.
Mind you, it almost didn't. In 1969 a fire nearly destroyed it.... and all because a local lad had a big argument with his girlfriend. Angered, he had gone down into the village to drown his sorrows in the nearby pub. He brought back a can of petrol and set the cottage end wall ablaze, seeking some dramatic way to show how upset he was 🔥 He was eventually arrested and put in gaol.... but there is a happy ending. The house was saved and fully restored... and he was later released to marry the young woman. And they, along with the house, lived happily ever after. Proof that love conquers all but please don't try to burn down a national treasure to prove it. 'Ta very much!

'ta very much! . before marrying william shakespeare in 1582, anne hathaway lived here in an area called "shottery", which is just a mile west from the centre of stratford. this thatched beauty is incredibly well preserved. gorgeous fireplaces, authentic period furniture, tudor wood beams and perfectly managed thatch. it even smells lovely. it's believed the first hathaway to live in the house was anne’s grandfather john hathaway, who was a tenant farmer. anne, later shakespeare’s wife, was born here in 1556. when the site was a farm the house was known as ‘hewlands’ and the hathaway family were very successful sheep farmers. the garden would have been a farmyard with some livestock and likely a herb garden. the very last hathaway to own the cottage was mary baker, who sold the property to the shakespeare birthplace trust in 1892. i keep asking if i can move in, but so far no response. . the whole of stratford-upon-avon is a must see when you visit britain. have you been? photo by @photosofbritain 🇬🇧 want your photos of britain to be featured? follow us and tag us in the picture too!

I've been embracing autumn recently but I haven't really moved on from soft light and summer fields...
Do you have a favourite time of year? I like it all except February/March. But late summer is my favourite for sure x

I mentioned in my Stories yesterday that one day I needed to explain why this house was my favourite house in Spitalfields. It’s much less photographed than its famous pink neighbour or the houses in Fournier St around the corner, but for me it’s fascinating.
It’s where a woman named Anna Maria Garthwaite lived in the 1730s until her death in the 1760s. She was what we would call a silk designer, although she referred to herself as a “pattern drawer”. She was the daughter of a Lincolnshire clergyman, and she never married. She moved to Spitalfields aged 40 with her widowed sister, and they bought this house, which was newly built. And here she set up shop, designing hundreds of silk patterns for the master weavers and silk merchants of Spitalfields which would eventually be worn by the most fashionable women of the day. Many of her designs are held in the V&A and they contain detailed technical instructions for the weavers who would make them.
We don’t know how she acquired this technical knowledge, or why she worked at all when she probably didn’t need to. I like to think she simply had a creative urge that needed expression, and that the work gave her so much pleasure that just had to do it.

A lot of tactical zooming on this one to displace the ugly parked cars 😂
.
What are Sunday’s for you? I remember when I was at school, Sunday’s were a day to eat roast dinner (including like 35 roast potatoes that my sisters and I would mentally claim then fight over) and then I would spend the afternoon/evening panicking about homework I hadn’t started and procrastinating so wouldn’t end up doing it till Monday morning 🤦🏻‍♀️
.
Sundays are now a day to eat my body weight in junk, envy all those tucking into a roast and consoling my husband about work the next day 😬 TV time and a lie in in the mornings and about 7 cups of tea before I feel human again 💀

Chester, beautiful in rain, sunshine or snow. Captured by myself over on @postcardsbyhannah 📸
.
Anyone with plans for today? I am wishing I was back here but with more time, there are many lovely independent restaurants and boutique shops dotted over the city, and very friendly people too. But sadly I don’t think I could face a six hour round trip on a sleepy Sunday!
.
In 616, Æthelfrith of Northumbria defeated a Welsh army at the brutal and decisive Battle of Chester, and probably established the Anglo-Saxon position in the area from then on. The Northumbrian Anglo-Saxons used an Old English equivalent of the British name, Legacæstir, which was current until the 11th century, when, in a further parallel with Welsh usage, the first element fell out of use and the simple name Chester emerged.

Sandwick in the Lake District in early evening light by @nudge31 // “The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal. Always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest; always there will be the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking, and those who seek and find while there is still time will be blessed both in mind and body.” - Alfred Wainwright // Want to be featured here? St Michael’s Mount, tho’ 😍
.
Home of the St Aubyn family, St Michael’s Mount was given to the National Trust in 1954 who still look after it today. It was here that the Spanish Armada was first spotted in 1588 and during WWII it was fortified against invasion as some Nazis planned to live here after invading Britain (try again, Adolf ✌️). Points of interest include the mummified cat 😖, the statue of St Michael defeating Lucifer, the tidal clock and the Chevy Chase room, which (rather disappointingly) is not a room dedicated solely to the American actor.
