Calder created the monumental standing mobile théâtre de nice in 1970. the work was installed in front of its eponymous building, which had recently opened in the southern french city. at different points in his life, calder had spent time in the area around nice, culminating in the late 1960s in saint-paul-de-vence with his 70th birthday party at the famed colombe d’or (1968) and his major retrospective at the fondation maeght (1969). in 1990, the sculpture was moved to the entrance of the musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain in nice, where it still stands today.
