At the start of the year my aim was to read 20 books by december 2018. i have no idea if it's a realistic target but it looks like i am on course.
"the skin i'm in" is a short but brilliant novel by sharon flake about a little girl called maleeka who suffers every day from taunts of other kids in her class.
if they are not getting at her about her embarassing home-made clothes or her good grades at school, it's about her dark, black skin - a deeper shade than any of theirs.
when a new teacher, whose face is blotched with a startling white patch, starts at their school, maleeka can see there is bound to be trouble for her too.
but the new teacher's attitude surprises maleeka. miss saunders loves the skin she is in and this has a profound effect on maleeka and there is a massive attitude shift in the way she starts to look at herself. "the black skin is not a badge of shame but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness" ( marcus garvey). we should love and teach our kids to love their skin colour, whether they are black, white, asian, red...love the skin you are in ✊
