'in moonlight black boys look blue'
I wanted to talk to my students about the film "moonlight." i wasn't sure how to do it without them not seeing the film. even if the film was available, i would not have shown it due to the adult content. but the film is directly speaking to the lives of my students. there are plenty of males like chiron in the public school system. what i did to pull this lesson off? we read an article about the director and then we read a brief summary of the film. my goal is to never overwhelm them and make the lesson as visual as possible. i focused on four themes: structural poverty, racism, resilience, and a coming of age story. we discussed identity a little but i tell them it's important to know who am i not what am i. we examined the role of the protagonist and how the protagonist will always deal with some sort of struggle/conflict. i am always nervous when putting together a lesson. i never know how they will receive it. i think they got it! #moonlight
