Trail...running...is sometimes trail hiking! today was humid, and the second time in my grown-up life i've run without a shirt on. it's seems like a orchestra of horns blast a fugue whenever a woman dares to take off her shirt, or maybe that's just me, feeling the drama and judgement of 2,000 years of women hating their bodies, for whatever reason. pick one.
but f**k me it was hot and regardless of the shape of my body, and current ab-count (for the record, 1.5) the cotton tank top was coming off. it felt amazing. the cool air from the creek bed on my belly, my sweat just dropping off me instead of soaking my shirt. even running down nancy greene way on a sunny saturday i felt no shame. i don't have a typical runner's body, but i've never claimed to and i also don't care to. i have my body, and it runs. it's also great at lifting lawn mowers into trucks and it can even bench press my mom, and my friend kate's bodyweight. (not at the same time, don't be too impressed.) and today, no one really treated me different without my shirt on. women still asked me for directions, men still said good morning to me, and later, a whole family took pictures of me and my dog. probably the dog. clearly the biggest obstacle for me getting over myself, is myself. so when i surreptitiously removed my shirt and stuffed it into my running vest, i was over it. i'm a runner because i run. and i'm not wearing a shirt because i'm hot. stuff jiggles and bounces but that's a body for ya. liberate your belly!
