While everyone is in quarantine mode during the coronavirus pandemic, medical personnel are standing on the front lines of the fire. practically everything around me is “out of business until further notice” except hospitals. despite the social isolation that has been strongly encouraged worldwide, healthcare workers are inches away from patients checking pulses, doing physical exams, placing ivs, giving medications and performing surgeries. we cant work from home. we will show up and work overtime in the most high risk circumstances.
coronavirus has effectively suspended or cancelled our surrounding world. yet clinics and hospitals will rightfully remain open. healthcare workers are human. we are also scared despite any reassurances that may come from statistics, science or medicine. but i guess this is what that whole hippocratic oath thing was about. so let’s walk into this fire armed with soap, water, masks, stethoscopes and our hearts.
the bottom line is: i likely have or will get covid19 as a result of my work but i have not only accepted this fact but i am also ok with it.
i took an oath years ago to give my best for the sake of others and everything i’ve done has led me to this moment. my priority is my patients and i know all my colleagues feel the same.
my priority is to get my patients in and out of the hospital as soon as possible so they don’t spend any extra time in a high risk environment. now more than ever i feel a responsibility towards those who need medical care. during this outbreak, millions of nurses, techs, doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, respiratory therapist, dentists, physician assistants, physical therapist, hospital administration and students plus people from some other professionas too are endangering their health by doing their jobs. for this, i say thank you. i am proud to be part of the brave group of men and women who sacrifice their self for others.
heroes don’t wear capes. they wear white coats and scrubs.
