& my "different" #metoo
story: i didn't speak up earlier because i wanted to be clear about what i was going to say. firstly thank you to everyone who did, for your courage and bravery! you're all amazing! i've definitely experienced my share of s****l harassment, honestly for a time i thought it was normal, that it was part of being a woman. but i always try to focus on the solution rather than the problem - don't get me wrong, talking about and having awareness of the problem is needed too, but instead of talking about a time i felt violated, i'm going to share a story about a time when i experienced really good men...
when i was 20 years old my friend and i travelled from australia to la to experience the ultimate hollywood adventure, and that we did. we got jobs at disneyland, we were seat fillers at the golden globe awards, extras in tv shows and we partied like it was 1999 (it was close, it was the year 2000). one night we met two older men (around 40) at a club and went back to their beverly hills mansion to continue the party. we were young, naive, d***k and financially dry. this would have been the perfect opportunity for these men to use their power and money to coerce us into some sort of sordid affair, but instead they were true gentleman. they treated us with respect, they treated us like friends, like equals. they gave us food when we were hungry, they gave us a place to stay, they gave us our space, and when they couldn't drive us to the airport, they gave us cab fares. they showed us true unconditional friendship and i'll always be grateful for their respect, kindness and generosity.
thank you to all the men showing their support, apologizing, making changes & taking a stand - that's a real man, a true hero, a warrior.
strength is in gentleness, kindness, compassion and respect, not in aggression, force, manipulation, harassment, s****l notoriety or coercion.
it's not good that these things have happened, but it is good that's it's coming to light. that's how we change it!
here's to standing in our power and true love and respect for each other, coz at the end of the day, we're all in this together <3
