Elizabeth Siddal, a milliner from Hatton Garden, London, was an unlikely influencer of fashion. Yet, after being found by artist Walter Deverell, she was introduced to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, whom she later married. She would go on to become a noted poet and artist, but is best known for her work as muse to Rossetti and other key members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Her style was distinctive; she deliberately eschewed the crinolines and restrictive garments of the 1860s and instead designed looser, less structured gowns. These, often based on women’s workwear, were made from plain fabrics and simple shapes. Despite social norms, Siddal did not wear a corset and paired her ethereal designs with loose hairstyles, flowing fabrics, unstructured waistlines, no cuffs and no collars. Jane Morris, wife of famed artist William Morris, also advocated a similar style and soon, other artists, like the actress Ellen Terry or photographer Julia Margaret Cameron were inspired to follow suit. What came to be viewed as the Pre-Raphaelite style was not merely a clear fashion statement however, it was also used to highlight the very place of women in society. The distinctive dress, together with the art is helped produce, was then, deliberately subversive, and continues to be viewed so today. Is this painting an erotic Victorian fantasy too far? John William Waterhouse's Hylas and the Nymphs is back on the wall at the Manchester Art Gallery, a week after it was taken down in an effort to provoke debate. Visitors were invited to give their reaction by sticking Post-it notes on the wall.

My favorite dresses and favorite colors. I couldn’t help sharing these beauties again. I would really like to sew a replica for spring- that fits properly! If you notice, any picture of me wearing the blue dress also has a white sash. That is to hide the fact that I am too big for it to close all of the way! 🤣 I only wear my special antiques very, very carefully for fun photo shoots. I’ve been working on sewing historic pieces that I can wear more freely.~

Today I started a full leg on my beautiful darling @beth_cc - I laid out the design on photoshop, based on a selection of photographs and pre-raphaelites paintings - and lined three quarters of it today! I’m so excited to create a large scale tattoo depicting some of my absolutely favourite imagery and in such a sensitive and romantic palette. We will be blogging our progress of it over the many many months that it will take to create. #legtattoo #preraphaelite #tattooart #uktta #uktattooartists @inkantations13 #girlswithtattoos #tattoo

Kelmscott Manor, Lechlade, United Kingdom. *
William Morris's 'loveliest haunt of ancient peace' in the Cotswolds, where he found calm and inspiration.
*
William Morris (1834-1896) first saw Kelmscott in 1871 and soon signed a joint lease on the building with his friend and colleague Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). Morris was never able to live here permanently, as his professional life kept him in London, but it became a focus for his imagination. He described it as having evolved so organically that it seemed to have 'grown up out of the soil', its stone slates giving 'the same sort of pleasure in their orderly beauty as a fish's scales or a bird's feathers'. A woodcut of the East Front by Charles Gere was used as the frontispiece to Morris's socialist 'fantasy', News from Nowhere (1890), where it represents the utopian 'old house by the Thames to which the people of this story went'.
*
After Morris's death in 1896, his widow Jane and daughters Jenny and May continued to use the house and in 1923, May Morris made it her permanent home. Following her death in 1938 she was buried, with her parents and sister, in the churchyard of nearby St George's Church. In 1962, Kelmscott Manor devolved upon the Society of Antiquaries of London, and today displays a rich collection of works and objects associated with Morris and his circle, including furniture, textiles, paintings, ceramics and metalwork. Visitors are also invited to walk through the historic garden, which Morris described as 'look[ing], if not a part of the house, yet at least the clothes of it'. #williammorris #morris #aesthetic #inspiration #interior #design #socialism #visionary #artist #art #designer #victorian #kelmscott #cotswolds #visitengland #england #history #arthistory #rossetti #preraphaelite #janemorris #workingfromhome

All thoughts, all passions, all delights,
Whatever stirs this mortal frame,
All are but ministers of Love,
And feed his sacred flame.
Oft in my waking dreams do I
Live o'er again that happy hour,
When midway on the mount I lay,
Beside the ruined tower.
The moonshine, stealing o'er the scene
Had blended with the lights of eve;
And she was there, my hope, my joy,
My own dear Genevieve! #Love by #samueltaylorcoleridge #illustration by #johneverettmillais #poem #art #love #couple #englishliterature #midnight #oneofmyfavourites #preraphaelite #anglophile #victorian #arthistory #instaart #igersart #arte #artlover #instagood #instalove #picoftheday #pictureoftheday 🌜🌕🌙🌌💙

"revolutionary" is a good word to describe the pre-raphaelite brotherhood, since they revolutionized british art in the mid-victorian era. color, light, romance, biblical and mythological tales, and lots of redheads! hehe. . . . . . #victorianfebruary @americanduchess #preraphaelite #dantegabrielrossetti #elizabethsiddal #christinarossetti #ellenterry #dickensfair #art #tate #tatelondon #dickens #revolution #revolutionary #painting #aestheticmovement #fashion #silkgowns #wombats #top

Looking after the Victorian gem of All Saints’, Cambridge today. We’ve had good footfall, a rambling group, locals, course attendees and the curious. Although not an ancient building, the nostalgia enveloping the pre-Raphaelite movement brings people in to see the mighty east window here, along with the highly decorative wall stencilling.
