diverticulosis is the condition of infected or inflamed pouches in the colon that bulge or erupt outward through weaker spots in the intestinal walls. the pouches themselves are known as diverticula. symptoms that may stem from this disorder are pain in the lower left abdomen, constipation, bleeding, and possible infections. the pockets can become inflamed, swollen and painful.
diverticular disease is common in developed or industrialized countries—particularly the united states, england, and australia—where low-fiber diets are common. the disease is rare in countries of asia and africa, where people eat high-fiber vegetable diets. in the viewpoint of traditional chinese medicine (tcm), we believe that improper diet does indeed play a major role, comparing the pouches to cold abscess due to over consumption of raw and cold foods that the body can't break down. if you can't properly break down the fruits and vegetables that you are consuming, you will have a lack of fiber present in your diet.
tcm treatment recommends chinese herbs, proper nutrition, regular acupuncture and moxibustion to treat the imbalance. by working on strengthening stomach and spleen function and reducing inflammation, the intestines should be able to heal and symptoms should dramatically reduce.
for proper diet, avoid cold and raw foods as the stomach and spleen thrive on warmth and become nourished by foods both warm in temperature and essence. ginger power helps reduce inflammation significantly as well as foods like turmeric, bone broth and omega-3 fatty acids. switching from cold water to room temperature or warm water can help increase your level of hydration significantly, which helps the colon work with ease. increase the consumption of cooked vegetables and reduce heavy foods like dairy and large amounts of proteins.
congee is especially healing during a flare-up as it directly nourishes the spleen and stomach. check out my previous post for the recipe.
