the citroën axel was the long overdue result of an ambitious joint venture by citroen/psa and the romanian government. the axel story ended in tears. cooperating with the romanians turned out to be a big headache, mostly because citroen and their romanian partner had completely different goals. eventually citroën got so fed up with it, that they left the joint venture in 1988 without taking a penny with them.
that didn’t mean there weren’t any axels left to sell. in may 1989 citroën nederland wrote a memo to their dealers. "we currently have 114 axels in stock, that are registered by citroen nederland. those of you who haven’t met their payment obligations, will receive these cars. you will get these axels in consignment for 3 months, after that you will be billed automatically.” citroen nederland actually used these last axels as a threat to their dealers. one dealer recalls having 8 unsold axels on this lot in late 1989: it took him until 1992 to sell the last one. this particular car is one of those 114 ominous axels, that still give citroën dealers all over our country the chills.
