Chick rescue 🐥
these are the two chicks from the farm i posted about last week. i wanted to post about this to explain how this happened as the whole situation was very surreal. as i explained in my last post, we walked onto this unfenced chicken farm off a main road and started speaking with the farmer. he proudly showed us around the farm and explained how everything works. he allowed us to film and take pictures and left us alone in the barn for about 15 minutes for us to spend time with the babies who are only a few days old.
after spending about an hour on the farm, walking around and chatting with the farmer, we decided to ask him if we could take a couple chicks home (we didn’t tell him that we were vegan btw, we just said that we loved animals and were interested in knowing more about the farm, which is true). surprisingly, he said yes and replied with the question ‘how many do you want?’, followed by ‘do you want a girl or a boy?’ (swipe for video of this). he then gave us food, bedding, something to carry them home in and detailed instructions on how to look after them. he even gave me his number for any help we might need looking after them. after being so trusting and caring with us and the chicks, the most surreal moment was when we left and he told us ‘oh and to k**l them, just slice their throats’.
i was lost for words after such a surreal experience, feeling so many mixed emotions, happy to have saved two lives who would otherwise be killed in a couple weeks time but heart broken for the ones we left behind and also sad for the farmer who i’m sure has a good heart, just in the wrong place. i honestly don’t believe this man is a bad person and i believe that he has compassion somewhere in his heart, he too is a victim of this cruel industry of brainwashing. i actually thought to message him in a couple weeks time when the chicks have grown up and send him a video showing loving and affectionate the chickens are, how they are a part of the family just like a cat or dog would be and hope that it helps him to make the connection. what do you think?
