I spent nearly 3 hours on the trail for global running day today. i ran in silence contemplating. i tend to avoid social media politics, but as i become more educated on terms such as “white privilege” and “ black lives matter” i realize that sitting silent is no longer acceptable.
my grandmother was openly racist. she would make comments of hatred towards black movie stars. my dad squashed this quickly and openly in her face. he made sure that i was taught different. he explained to me some reasons from her own generational upbringing that caused her to act this way, but he made sure i realized that although she seemed unwilling to change, we as a family were not carrying on that tradition. my parents taught me to love all walks, which i have worked to pass along to my children, and i have watched as my own children have taken an educated stand against the current events.
black lives matter; my grandma was openly racist against blacks!! yes, all lives matter, but during this current time, it is time that as a “white privileged” person who can never even begin to comprehend what it must be like to be black, i want to openly say that i stand with people of colour. i am on your side, you deserve every right to the same freedoms that i have. times must change. i want you and your future generations to be able to walk fearlessly. i have always been on your side, but i will try to be better at educating myself and speaking up for you.
