We’ve had lots of magical outings lately, so how about a training post?
one of the things we use the most is also one of nim’s simplest commands... the long down/stay! this is something every dog, not just service dogs, should know. when we are shopping in a crowded environment (and it’s too much of a hassle to keep nim next to me) i find a corner and put her in a down. when we are out to eat at a restaurant and it isn’t appropriate for a dog to be at the table with me, i put her in a down (underneath the table). when i’m at a doctor’s appointment or having a procedure/test done, she’s in a down (even sometimes just outside of the door, like during an x-ray). i have to depend on the fact that she will not break her down, unless she absolutely needs to task. one example of this was her breaking a down/stay in a corner while i got my first tattoo. she came over to alert, so i was able to do some repositioning and then continue with my tattoo... while nim returned to a down/stay position immediately after alerting. there are so many applications for this with pets, as well! when you’re having friends over and don’t want your dog rushing up to them at the door, when your dog is playing with other dogs and needs to take a break, when you’re doing something tedious and your dog won’t stop coming over to investigate... there are so many times this comes in handy!
does your dog have a solid stay? what are some of the ways this benefits you, personally? i know a lot of you will mention the perks for dog photography! 😁 (and same!)
