This is probably one of my all time favorite memories of india. we arrived in agra before dawn on christmas day, dropped off our stuff at the reception of our hotel and made our way to the taj mahal. we knew little about agra, but what we did know was that we came here to see the taj mahal up close and personal. when we got to the east entrance there was an unexpectedly long line of eager locals and tourists already waiting for the doors to open. we knew that it was going to be crowded, but this was over the top. a little disappointed we decided to explore the area around the taj mahal to maybe get a glimpse of the palace from the outside. i remembered seeing a picture of this specific boat on a river, but didn’t expect to actually find it. we made our way down a little pathway, parallel to the sandstone walls of the taj mahal grounds, and ended up right at the river. but there was no boat to be found. so we just stood there in awe of the incredible beauty of the white moon shaped taj mahal. the morning was particularly foggy, with a light layer gliding a top the river, and after a few minutes, out of the corner of our eyes we saw something moving on the river. as it came closer and closer, emerging from the fog, we recognized that it was a man paddling on a boat. as he docked on the shore, a bunch of locals and a few tourists hopped off the boat. he looked in our direction and waved us over. we didn’t know what to expect but didn’t want to miss the chance to see the taj mahal from the river, so we jumped on, pushed off and headed for the middle of the river, just the three of us and the taj mahal.
