An array of vessels, functional pieces and decorative together. for most of my life as a potter i’ve made utilitarian pots and while i do very much like producing them i’m beginning to think more and more of ways to create vessels that are perhaps more sculptural—it forces me to invest more time into individual pieces and to think about their intent and purpose beyond simply being used functionally or being just a beautiful object, which i am still mostly content with.
the groups of pots marked with lines i make is something i can’t wait to explore further, yet, the draw to create simple, usable pots is still so present, often the idea of just throwing boards of simple bowls, mugs, storage jars and other pieces is more enticing. truthfully i like repetition, the satisfaction that comes from seeing rows of freshly thrown pots, still wet and glistening is hard to match in the ceramics world. a healthy balance of the two is where i’m sure most studio potters would like to be, creating both decorative pieces alongside an ever-changing functional range that develops overtime as the rest of your body of work changes.
