Apples and firewood! yep, it’s #fall
.do you have any fall traditions? .
one of ours is to go to our local farmers market, find an apple grower, and buy a box of what are called “seconds”. usually we arrange this ahead of time because they may not bring seconds to market unless they know someone will buy them. sometimes you can even go directly to their orchard, so try reaching out to a local #applegrower. seconds cost much less than the fancy grade because they have bruising or damage from insects. we don’t care because we use them to make #applesauce
or #applepie. .
my girls love this tradition and start to ask about getting apples and making sauce as soon as the summer is waning. .
we soak our apples in #bakingsoda
and water before we use them because most apple growers (including #organic!) use many insecticides and fungicides and soaking them in baking soda solution for 15 minutes and then washing them will remove most of them. although we peel these apples we feed the peels to our #chickens
or we #compost
them and we want to remove the chemicals before adding the peels to our #foodsupply.
