“citrus blend,” 6” x 6” oil on wood panel with 1-5/8” deep sides. my #100daysofencouragement
tribute artist for the day is @erinleegafill
— who inspired my painting with her observational still lifes. erin lives with her artist husband tom birmingham in the big sur area of california, in a cabin above her family’s famed restaurant nepenthe (derived from the greek word for "no sorrow"). here amidst the history and folklore, she writes and creates powerful abstracted landscapes inspired by the endless beauty of the region. as the niece of the famous colorist & textile artist, kaffe fassett, she comes to her love of artistry naturally — and her explorations of color and pattern in still life settings takes full advantage of the fabric stash that comes from being connected to a giant in the field.
when i read her posts, i am transported by the beauty of her paintings, but also by the power of her words and reflections. and i appreciate the disciplines that she has crafted into her life. in her book, drinking from a cold spring: a little book of hope, she talks about her daily ritual of walking with her husband, where they talk and don't talk, let ideas flow across the horizon of their minds, and come together as individuals with a shared life in a sacred hour of each day. it reminded me of how i feel about my daily painting time with @brianmillerart
each morning. erin captures the experience perfectly, noting the comfort that comes from givens, "a few things that we can build in to support everything else we want to leave our lives open for." to me, the dailiness of our early morning painting time — creative togetherness and separateness — is so life-giving; it has come to seem vital to our art and our relationship.
