"imbalance of power" | 2018.12.10
the image has an air of menace, which palpably shrouded the scene...along with tension, expectation, camaraderie, purpose, and clouds of stinging smoke.
many of you have asked for images of the local unrest making global headlines, but i'm not one to add my eyes to popular public spectacle; my jam is to wander vistas lending my own perspective. so on saturday i didn't observe the gilets jaunes, i joined them. this week, i’ll share some of what i experienced, and hope to post a longer narrative on my website.
police were charged with protecting property and maintaining order, not levying taxes or crafting social policy...but as representatives of l’état, they were provoked by casseurs and booed by activists as if macron were under every helmet. it was a difficult situation, but they largely acquitted themselves with restraint and professionalism...though i would have appreciated a little less tear gas.
still -- a show of force is by definition intimidating, and this moment conveys the disproportionate dominion exerted in the clash: on one side a squadron of heavily armed-and-armored troops, on the other a disabled gent wearing a yellow vest and courage.
yet who looks more nervous?
never underestimate the power of true resolve.
