Steering the newly upgraded volkswagen beetle convertible towards the north shore resulted in a pleasant ride through oahu to laniakea beach, just north of haleiwa, where the goal was to snorkel and maybe see a turtle.
we were snorkeling for half an hour in the shallow waters, when my glasses fogged up and i just couldn’t see anymore. unable to stand as the water was deeper than i am tall, i headed to shore to fix the goggles onto my head. it was then that i noticed a crowd surrounding a turtle on the beach. i felt sorry for the creature as i could imagine that it wasn’t a pleasant experience for it to be surrounded by hoarded of people. so i stood in the sand by the rocks in the water.
suddenly, a rock brushed against my left ankle. since when do rocks float, my brain asked itself. so i turned, looked and yelped, scrambling backwards, and falling over. imagine the scene when ariel from the little mermaid fell backwards while trying to stand up. yep. me.
there was a huge turtle right in front of me, which had brushed against my foot. avoiding twisting my ankle, i jumped for my camera, pushed it underwater and started taking pictures as another turtle passed by, on its way out to the sea, narrowly avoiding the humans in the water, and kicking up sand in its wake.
we later heard that there were 48 turtles that day in laniakea beach, and we were lucky to see 3 or 4 of them. i was in awe of these beautiful creatures and hoped to come across one again.
